Waiting to descend 'Neptune's Staircase', the eight locks at Banavie, to Corpach, Loch Eil, and the west coast cruising grounds, boats sit in the canal basin whilst the evening sun of late summer warms the slopes of Ben Nevis. Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain, rises from sea-level on the shores of Loch Linnhe to 4,406ft(1,344m) over the town of Fort William. 'Beinn Nibheis', in Gaelic means the 'terrible mountain'.

The Caledonian Canal opened from Corpach on Loch Eil, to Inverness and the Beauly Firth in 1822, and offered a safe route from the west coast to the Moray Firth rather than the perilous route around Cape Wrath.
