Our Prints

Our 'watercolour' prints are produced to the highest quality Discover Scotland prints are created on a variety of fine art papers using the finest pigment based archival inks.

When we first began our range of prints we had them printed to fine art standards in the traditional manner using the four-colour offset lithographic process. However, the fine art print market has been revolutionised by a new type of process called giclée printing.

Giclée printing (pronounced gee-clay) produces exceptional results and is particularly suited to fine art printing as prints can now be made on original materials such as uncoated watercolour papers or canvas producing a high-resolution print that looks and feels similar to the original artwork. The giclée process is also capable of producing the millions of possible colour variations in an original by using no less than eight different inks rather than the four colours used in the traditional litho' process.

The original work is first carefully converted to a suitable high-resolution digital file for giclée printing. All the subtleties of colour and texture are reproduced, resulting in a print that is so close in quality to the original work as to be virtually indistinguishable. In terms of visual quality, the high resolution and quality of reproduction now far exceed the previous lithographic standards.

However, there are other benefits to be enjoyed with giclée printing apart from the visual quality of the print. Our giclée prints should last for many decades without noticeable fading if properly treated, and giclée printing also allows us to produce our prints in far smaller editions. For example, all our Discover Scotland 'open' editions are run in quantities of around 500 to 1000, whilst our limited editions are now limited to no more than 250 copies.
